Who Do You Listen To?
by Joe Mayne

Can you think of a person who, when they speak, you focus all of your attention on them? Are they animated? Do they speak clearly and quickly? These characteristics of effective communication when used in any combination are powerful tools. Think about the people you really enjoy listening to. You probably even remember what they said.

Finding employees who can get the message across is one of the toughest challenges facing business today.

Truly effective sales people, office managers, roofers, assembly workers all are able to organize their thoughts and speak so others not only hear but absorb.

The years I spent interviewing for Procter and Gamble, I looked for certain communication qualities from an applicant. Did they speak in front of groups? Read in Church? Have a part in a High School play or Community Theater? Where they in choir? What about working on volunteer committees? These all indicate that they have had some experience in formal communication.

Chances are that if you speak effectively in front of .

groups...people will listen to you one on one.

I encourage everyone to remember those times when you presented to or spoke in front of a number of people. Add these to your resume. Employers can train you in a skill but if you are unable or too nervous to talk to me effectively about you, then how well can you interact with co-workers or a client? Take a speaking part in the next Community play, practice becoming a dynamic, "impactful" presenter.

We all need the practice. Remember, when the question is asked..."Who do you listen to?" You may hear your name mentioned
