What Is The Value of "X"?
by Joe Mayne

This mysterious Generation "X". Here are five unique traits that members of this group inherently possess that today's dynamic, fast-paced marketplace desperately needs:

JUST DO IT -- This very pragmatic approach comes from the realization that action is the necessary ingredient for change and "walking the walk" is a basic building block of success.
TIES THAT WORK -- Relationships are extremely vital to Gen X. They place great value on developing and nurturing relationships. X-ers first work to build a solid foundation of familiarity and trust, then gain a true understanding of the needs of the "buyer." This trait will not only result in a satisfied customer over the long term but a network of contacts that will follow the seller from job to job and industry to industry.

TECHNO-COMFORT -- Not just tinkerers. X-ers are beyond the novelty stage with technology. It is firmly integrated into productivity and success in their (today's) world. There is almost an impatience with waiting for the next innovation. Organizations with dust-covered PCs need these people to guide them into the next Millennia.

CHANGEMASTERS -- When you are raised in an environment of constant change, you learn to adapt...fast. While the rest of humanity shudders at the thought of even the slightest change, X-ers thrive. The marketplace does, and will continue, to reward those who have the fortitude to run out, grab change and drag it forward.

IN SEARCH OF THE ALMIGHTY FAMILY -- This "new" approach to life is summarized by an understanding that a career is not the end in itself. A good job (actually many good jobs) will provide the avenue that Gen X will take to provide for the needs of their family. They are not going to carve out "quality time" for their kids. They want, and are getting, quantity time as well.
What this generation has to offer is what our economy needs. They may not have had the "Leave It To Beaver" upbringing but the challenges they've experienced have positively prepared them for success in the future.
